Enhancing the Music Museum Experience for Children with Playful Learning

Beethoven's Adventure

The aim of this project was to improve the learning experience for children visiting the Music Museum in Frederiksberg by introducing playful learning. Our solution involved expanding an existing treasure-hunt activity to create a collaborative and enjoyable learning experience for children. We also provided a framework for teachers to enhance the creativity and playfulness of the museum space for children.

Semester project, Aalborg University, 2022/23

In collaboration with Musik Museet

“How might we create a playful learning experience while considering the current museum environment, where kids can feel excited and free to explore music using multiple senses?”

Solution

Our solution involved creating a non-digital treasure hunt activity that used playful learning to enhance the learning experience for children visiting the Music Museum. The activity was designed to be collaborative, fun and engaging for children. We also provided a framework for teachers to enhance the creativity and playfulness of the museum space for children.

Process

Our team followed the Five Stages of Design Thinking model to create an iterative process. We began by conducting interviews with teachers and playful learning experts, as well as focus groups with children to gain a comprehensive understanding of the museum and its contextual environment.

To develop ideas, we employed a variety of methods, including Lightning Demos from Google Sprint and Weighted Objectives decision tool from Product Design field. Additionally, we organized a Six Hats workshop at a bar to create a more relaxed environment for generating ideas.

Takeaways

This project helped us develop our skills in multi-disciplinary teamwork, client pitching, design thinking, design sprint, and focus groups with stakeholders and user groups. We also learned about the playful learning model developed by Lego, showing the spectrum of free play and structured learning. This model was useful in guiding us towards creating a solution that was in line with our objectives.
